Inspired by Joseph Campbell’s Hero’s Journey, this adventure follows the universal steps of growth: from the ordinary world to the call to adventure, through trials, and toward transformation. Along the way, I’ve learned that every step, no matter how small, carries the power to reshape who we are.

🏠 Ordinary World
To be honest, I was mostly twiddling my thumbs at school. I wasn’t exactly a good student, didn’t have many friends, and was often lost in my thoughts. I’d get caught doodling ugly creatures in the corner of my notebook—creatures that looked strangely similar to my teachers. So, yeah, school and I were a match made in heaven. And yet, I loved nothing more than learning about topics that fascinated me so I could pass on what I’d learned to those around me.
🏠 Monde Ordinaire
Pour être honnête avec vous, je me tournais les pouces à l’école. Je n’étais pas forcément bon élève, je n’avais pas beaucoup d’amis et j’étais souvent dans la lune. Je me faisais souvent surprendre à gribouiller des créatures moches dans le coin de mon cahier – créatures ressemblant étrangement à mes profs. Vous l’avez compris : l’école et moi, c’était une grande histoire d’amour. Et pourtant, j’adorais plus que tout apprendre sur des sujets qui m’intéressaient pour transmettre ces nouvelles connaissances à mes proches.
☎️ Call to Adventure
So, in 2014, I decided to go for my dream of becoming a teacher. I was finally going to be able to share knowledge with the next generation. Full of hope, I started a mythology-themed YouTube channel that same year, where I could tell stories while teaching. But after a few months, reality hit hard: maybe teaching wasn’t for me after all. Or maybe it just wasn’t the right time? So I decided to wait patiently, ready to grab any opportunity that came my way.
☎️ Appel de l’Aventure
Alors, en 2014, j’ai décidé de réaliser mon rêve de devenir professeur. J’allais enfin pouvoir transmettre le savoir aux nouvelles générations. Plein d’espoir, j’ai créé la même année une chaîne YouTube de vulgarisation de la mythologie, car je pouvais transmettre des connaissances en racontant une histoire. Mais au bout de quelques mois, ce fut la douche froide : en fin de compte, l’enseignement n’était peut-être pas pour moi. Ou bien n’était-ce tout simplement pas le bon moment ? Alors je me suis armé de patience, prêt à saisir toute opportunité.
🚪 Crossing the Threshold
In 2016, an opportunity came knocking: moving to England to teach. But my English skills were as solid as an Antarctic heatwave, and I didn’t have a penny to my name. I was scared, but after some thought, I decided to do it anyway. I felt the need to rise to the challenge, and today I can say it was one of the best decisions of my life. I left France behind and stepped into this new world.
🚪 Passage du Seuil
En 2016, une opportunité se présenta : partir vivre et enseigner en Angleterre. Mais mon niveau d’anglais était aussi élevé que la température en Antarctique et je n’avais pas un sou. J’avais peur, mais après y avoir réfléchi, j’ai décidé de le faire quand même. Je ressentais le besoin de relever ce défi, et aujourd’hui je peux dire que ce fut l’une des meilleures décisions de ma vie. J’ai alors laissé la France derrière moi pour entrer dans ce nouveau monde.
⚔️ Tests, Allies et Enemies
Against all odds, I ended up staying in England for three years. I made some friends there and learned to overcome challenges like the students’ lack of motivation, my ever-limited English, and… the Haggis. Little by little, my English improved, and I gained confidence. I even thought about starting a blog, but I nipped the idea in the bud. So, I decided it was time to stop playing a side role and really become a teacher!
⚔️ Tests, Alliés et Ennemis
Contre toute attente, je suis resté trois ans en Angleterre. Je m’y suis fait des amis et j’ai appris à surmonter les épreuves telles que la mauvaise volonté des élèves en classe, mon niveau d’anglais toujours aussi limité et… le Haggis. Peu à peu, mon anglais est devenu meilleur et j’ai gagné en confiance en moi. J’ai même pensé à créer un blog mais j’ai tué le projet dans l’œuf. Alors j’ai décidé qu’il était temps pour moi d’arrêter de faire de la figuration et de devenir moi-même professeur !
🧭 Approach to the Inmost Cave
I signed up at university to learn how to teach French in secondary schools. I got hands-on training, guided by mentors I met along the way. After earning my PGCE degree, I started working in a school and even joined the online platform Preply. So, I’d come home from school each night to teach French to students around the globe. I was finally about to reach my goal and make my dream come true! 😇
🧭 Approche de la Caverne
Je me suis alors inscrit à l’université afin d’apprendre à enseigner le français à l’école secondaire. J’ai été formé sur le terrain, guidé par plusieurs mentors rencontrés sur ma route. Après avoir obtenu mon diplôme (PGCE), j’ai commencé à travailler dans une école et j’ai même décidé de me lancer en parallèle sur la plateforme en ligne Preply. Ainsi, je rentrais chaque soir de l’école pour enseigner le français à des étudiants partout sur le globe. J’allais enfin atteindre mon objectif et réaliser mon rêve ! 😇
🤕 Ordeal
Alas, it wasn’t meant to last. I loved my job and was lucky to have fantastic colleagues. Still, in my second year, I started facing major self-doubt. I was teaching at a school where the students were difficult and barely interested in learning French, a bit like how I used to listen to my English teacher with earplugs in. I’d become a teacher to feel useful, but this wasn’t fulfilling anymore. Back to square one.
🤕 Épreuve Suprême
Hélas, ça n’allait pas durer. J’adorais mon métier et j’avais la chance d’avoir des collègues adorables. Malgré tout, lors de ma deuxième année, j’ai connu une énorme remise en question. Je travaillais dans une école où les élèves étaient très difficiles et ne montraient que très peu d’intérêt à apprendre le français, un peu comme moi quand j’écoutais attentivement ma prof d’anglais avec des boules Quies. J’étais devenu professeur avant tout pour me sentir utile et ce cadre n’était aujourd’hui pas assez gratifiant. Retour à la case départ.
🔑 Reward (Seizing The Sword)
Fortunately, I had some long talks with friends who gradually lifted my spirits. So, I decided to take charge of my life. I remembered this French blog idea I’d had two years earlier—two years during which I never dared to start it. Now or never, I thought. I had plenty of free time, so I was finally going to dive in seriously. I was ready to face new challenges. Finally, I created the blog French with Stories.
🔑 La Récompense
Heureusement, j’ai pu avoir de longues discussions avec mes ami.e.s, qui m’ont peu à peu redonné le sourire. Alors j’ai décidé de prendre ma vie en main. Je me suis souvenu de ce projet de blog de français que j’avais eu deux ans auparavant. Deux ans pendant lesquels je n’ai jamais osé me lancer. C’était le moment ou jamais. Puisque j’avais beaucoup de temps libre, j’allais enfin pouvoir m’y mettre sérieusement. J’étais prêt à affronter de nouveaux défis. Finalement, j’ai créé le blog French with Stories.
✨ Resurrection
I’d found what I was looking for; all these trials had taught me so much. I was close to reaching my goal, but to do so, I had to work hard and leave the past behind. I’d finally found meaning in my life, and I was going to fight for it. Teaching is my passion and always will be. But I’d learned one thing: unlike I once thought, teaching in a school had been a dead end. This passion had to be shared on the web—though maybe not with arachnophobes.
✨ Résurrection
J’avais obtenu ce que je cherchais, toutes ces épreuves m’avaient beaucoup appris. J’étais sur le point de conclure mon objectif, mais pour cela, il fallait que je travaille beaucoup et que je laisse le passé derrière moi. J’avais enfin trouvé un sens à ma vie et il fallait que je me batte pour cela. Ma passion est l’enseignement et le sera toujours. Mais j’avais compris une chose : contrairement à ce que je pensais, enseigner à l’école avait été une impasse. Cette passion devait être partagée avec tous sur la toile – sauf les arachnophobes.
💎 Return with the Elixir
Back on my home turf, yet transformed by this journey, I finally found my place outside the school walls. My blog, French with Stories, isn’t just a teaching platform: it’s a haven where each learner can explore the French language as an adventure. Now, every story I share, every word, and every lesson are fragments of the elixir I bring back from my experiences. For me, it’s the beginning of a new chapter.
💎 Retour avec l’élixir
De retour sur ma terre d’origine, mais transformé par ce périple, j’ai enfin trouvé mon rôle en dehors de l’école. Mon blog, French with Stories, n’est pas seulement une plateforme d’enseignement : c’est un refuge où chaque apprenant peut explorer la langue française comme une aventure. Désormais, chaque histoire que je partage, chaque mot et chaque leçon sont des fragments de l’élixir que je ramène de mes expériences. Pour moi, c’est le début d’un nouveau chapitre.
